The product was as written. The case is a bit cheap, but at the cost, can’t really complain. The grinding wheel does not seem to spin true. I took the wheel off several times and still the wobble while turning. I have not physically used the grinder yet so don’t really know the effect, or if it even has one when sharpening. I will have to wait and see. Overall, very please as it seems to be another great product from Grizzly.

I just received the grinder today and my first impressions are good although I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet. I was surprised that the straight edge jig and corresponding manual supplement are now included with the unit. I read the manual (available in PDF from Grizzlys website) before I purchased the grinder and ordered the JET straight edge jig (standard equipment with the JET and Tormek)so that I would be ready to go as soon as possible. Looks like I now have a spare!

So far the only negative is that the plastic substrate for the leather straup was cracked in shipping. Looks like it will still work though…

I received the grinder two weeks ago. The grinding wheel was chipped on the edge so I called Grizzly. They sent me a new wheel that day. Very good customer service! The stropping wheel wobbles a lot but i don’t think that will hurt anything. The grinding wheel MUST be DRESSED before use. If not, the edge produced using the straight edge attachment, can be angled and can cause premature tool failure (tool being sharpened) since more metal will be removed then needed. This can be adjusted if you sharpen by hand, but the attachment makes a really nice edge with a dressed grinding wheel. It is only $10 for the wheel dresser. Well worth the cost. I also found that much of the grinding wheel problems can was reduced by putting the other side of the grinding wheel toward the grinder.

A good value for the money.

One thing that is lacking is instructions on how to use the straight edge attachment.

Well, like everyone else I found the grinder a little beat up from shipping. The Styrofoam was all busted up and the paint job was a little roughed up. But nothing was broken or bent. Yes, the grinding wheel does wobble and yes it’s supposed to. I don’t think anyone knows why but it does. Note that this grinder DOES ship with a square edge jig for holding your plane irons and chisels. Nowhere in the description does it say this. Not on Amazon and not on the Grizzly site. So I purchased the Tormek SE-76 square edge jig also – just to make sure i could use my new grinder when it came in. The SE-76 works on the Grizzly, but because of the way it’s designed it kinda limits the side to side travel. I ended up going back to the cheaper stamped out jig that came with the unit. It works perfectly fine. When you look at the price difference between the Tormek T7 and this Grizzly T10010… No brainer guys. This grinder spins the wheel and the holder holds your iron to the stone. It works great for me. You should see the shavings I’m getting out of my planes.

I’m on my second one of these grinders… the first one came with a bent shaft and wouldn’t run true. The second one has a straight shaft but the finish on the brackets wasn’t the best and the strop wheel was severely warped on both. This doesn’t interfere with the function of the grinder but it makes the unit feel a little cheap. Grizzly did cover the shipping costs and were very friendly on the phone.

The bearings in the unit are just bronze bushings and I’m not sure how well they will wear under heavy use, but they should be easy to replace. Keep grit out of them if you want them to last.

For some reason I was shipped the second unit with a build date of 2008 on the plate but this is 2010. Maybe that was because I had to return the first and they sent me one out of a different warehouse or off the Bellingham showroom floor.

It sharpens to a hair shaving razor sharp edge, but be warned that you have to dress the grinding wheel to get a flat edge out of the box and this unit doesn’t come with a truing tool.

The motor runs smooth and the unit is heavy enough so it doesn’t walk around on the bench when in use. It does tend to spit water everywhere when sharpening a blade that is wider than the stone so plan for water to drip around it. You will want more than the included tool rest and jig if you are sharpening anything but plane irons and flat chisels. The angle gauge included works ok once you figure it out.
