We just built a new house, and have lived here less than 2 months. There is a HORRIBLE smell coming from the basement, in the area of the sump pump and grinder pump. The sump pump runs about every 15 minutes, which is somewhat normal since we are on a high water table. We have a well, and our water has a high sulphur content, but this is not a rotten egg smell, it smells more like sewage. It’s infiltrating the entire house, and I have no idea what to do about it! Can someone please help me? Thank you!

Cooking Salts Explained

Salt, also known as Sodium Chloride or (NaCl) is a vital component of the healthy and balanced human diet. Over half of the human body contains fluids that contain salt. Our blood, tears and saliva all contain salt. In addition we daily lose salt in our perspiration and urine. Muscles need salt in order to function, nerves require salt to carry messages and the digestive system cannot function without salt. So as you can see salt is very important to us humans.

Table Salt

Table salt is your everyday white granular salt found in most kitchens. It is most commonly mined from salt mines and then refined to remove other minerals until it is pure or close to pure sodium chloride. Often you will find table salt referred to as ‘iodized’, this term refers to the fact that the manufacturer has added iodine. This practice began in the earlier part of the last century in co-operation with the government to minimise the incidence of thyroid problems such as Goiter; an enlargement of the thyroid gland caused by an iodine deficiency.

Taste: Slightly metallic, uninteresting and can easily become overpowering.

Rock Salt

Rock salt is coarse and is usually mined from ancient salt deposits that are the result of very large bodies of water evaporating and leaving behind huge deposits of rock salt. Rock salt is much less refined than everyday table salt and contains more minerals and often more impurities. Rock salt is good for cooking with and ideal to use in salt grinders. I tend to use rock salt in blanching water as adding salt to water increases its boiling temperature and thus decreases the cooking time. I also use rock salt for presentation purposes such underneath oysters to keep them from falling over and visual appeal.

Taste: Rock salt can vary in taste depending on the region it is mined from and can possess interesting characteristics.

Sea Salt

Sea salt comes in many forms; granules, large crystals and flakes. Sea salt is cultivated from filtered high salt content sea water using a process of evaporation. As the water evaporates salt crystals begin to form, the crystals are then allowed to settle, then removed, drained, dried and ready to use. Sea salt (as well as seafood for that matter) naturally contains iodine and supplementing, as often found in ordinary table salt is not required if sufficient amounts of either constitute part of your diet. I tend not to use salt at the table as I believe if the Chef has done his job there should be no need for the addition of salt. However should a guest request salt I will serve them only pure sea salt flakes. My personal preference for sea salt is that of the English east coast, a region that has been producing beautiful flaky white soft crystals for centuries.

Taste: When used in cooking it blends seamlessly with the food. When used at the table it imparts a slight saltiness without the brackishness or lip cringing effect of other salts. A few flakes on the tongue and its oceanic origins become very apparent. Is sea salt worth the extra cost? In my professional and personal opinion, definitely.

Paul is a professional Chef and has worked and travelled all over the world. He now resides full time in Sydney Australia. Paul works as a personal Chef as well as a food writer, contributing regularly to http://www.chefspencil.com.

There are also a number of satellites available to the various tours PokerStars hosts. The site offers large multi-table tournament satellites as well as the popular Sit N’ Go steps, where players can win their way into events by playing through a series of single table tournaments.

As a standalone online poker room, PokerStars is the only brand to offer their downloadable poker software. PokerStars software is known as most stable and scalable product in the industry.

PokerStars provides quality 24/7 customer support via e-mail. The support team is very friendly and responsive. Unlike many other sites, PokerStars offers multi-language customer support available in many locations across the world.

PokerStars offers a 100% match bonus up to $50 for players using a marketing code. With prizepools that can top $10,000. That means when new players deposit at PokerStars they will receive a 100% match of their deposit up to the maximum $50. In order to release the bonus money players must earn 10 times the bonus amount in Frequent Player Points (FPPs). For example, if the player’s bonus was $30 they would have to earn 300 FPPs before the bonus would be released. FPPs are automatically collected through playing at real money cash games and tournaments. Five FPPs are given for every dollar in tournament fees and up to three FPPs are given in every hand at cash tables. Once the clearing conditions are met the bonus is automatically deposited into the players account balance.

Poker Stars host the richest tournaments in the world. First of all, sit ‘N’ goes are extremely popular, ranging from $1 to $5000. This includes single tables, multi tables, super popular heads-up tables and satellites. There’s a large number of scheduled tournaments in the package, too. This of course includes WPT-PCA qualifiers, European Poker Tour qualifiers, Aussie Millions qualifiers and most notably, World Series of Poker. Poker Stars sent 1,200 tournament winners to WSOP in 2005. The only downside is the softness of the competition, which can be quite tough at times.

Poker Stars offer a very fast e-mail support with reply times often as fast as within half an hour. There is no live chat and telephone support available.

PokerStars is also at the top of the heap in terms of security. A huge security team is monitoring every cash withdrawal, any suspicious play (of which there is very little) and most importantly – PokerStars is one of the few sites that puts every customer through an official age verification process which cuts way down on fraudulent accounts and stolen credit cards. The only reason that PokerStars does not receive a 10 is the “the V0id” controversy in the 2007 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP.) Briefly, the winner of the 2007 WCOOP Main Event (and more than $1 million USD) was found to cheating and disqualified. With that notable exception aside – the security is flawless.

PokerStars is built for players. It was amongst the first sites to offer fully resizable tables for grinders to take full advantage of multi-tabling. Its lobby is functional, informative and appealing. There are rarely any glitches in the software and if one should arise, its outstanding customer support team will be quick to resolve any issue. The only reason that PokerStars does not receive a 10 is its actual table graphics. The table is pleasant enough to look at but there are no player avatars, and while not having avatars has no bearing on the actual gameplay, it would be nice to see something in your opponent’s places.

As there are many online poker sites these days, you should take a look at as many sites as you can. You can find information about the best poker bonus that you can get your hands on at Poker Cash Saver, including poker stars poker as well.

With Lady Gaga’s song Poker Face being played all over the radio it got me to thinking who really does have the best Poker Face?

The best poker face tribute might have to go to Michael Mizrachi who is considered by many to be of the best poker players in the world, and he is pretty young to be able to have such things said about him ? he was born in Miami, Florida in 1981, and now splits his time between Florida and Las Vegas, with his wife Aidilay and their children.

Mizrachi’s started playing poker when he was just 15 years old, and quickly made a name for himself online and in live tournament games.

He decided to study medicine, but the lure of playing the game full-time took over and he dropped out of college. This was probably a wise move as he won the Five Diamond World Poker Classic II in Las Vegas in 2004, and secured himself a cool $274,000. In January 2005 he entered the World Poker Open, a World Poker Tour Event and made it to the final table. He went out in fifth place but proved that he had what it took to be a top-tier player. Not long after, he entered the L.A. Poker Classic and won it all. He has now won the World Poker Tournaments twice, and in 2006 CardPlayer Magazine named him Player of the Year.

Some say his nickname of the Grinder is due to his solid consistent style. However, when he first started being noticed on the tournament circuit, he would wear a baseball cap that said: ‘The Grinder ? I’m a machine’. So whether he intended for this to be his nickname hasn’t been confirmed! But he does state now that Grinder does signify his competiveness and determined spirit.

Mizrachi makes more money in a few wins than players ten years ago would have made in their whole poker playing career ? he is thought to have made $6.7million in tournament earnings. He is a dedicated family man, whose twin brother is also a professional poker player – their parents turned to games to keep the boys occupied and introduced poker to satisfy their need for competition. Mizrachi recently bought a tour bus so that his family could be with him when he is travelling between tournaments.

His favourite game is Texas Hold’em and he states that he has not learnt about poker through reading about it in a book. In fact Mizrachi credits playing online with some of his success in poker, as it gave him the opportunity to play against thousands of players thereby perfecting his technique, which he admits is aggressive, yet cautious and calculated.

Although Mizrachi might have a perfect Poker Face, don’t let the fact that you couldn’t lie to save yourself put you off!

The joy of online poker is that you don’t have to have a Poker Face, as no one can see you! You could be jumping around your living room in glee and no one would suspect a thing!
