We are putting down laminate and this patch is about 1/4in higher than the rest of the floor. I hate to rent a huge machine for such a small spot. Is there anything like a grinder or dremel type tool that I can use instead?
Yes, it is a foundation not a basement

Merely because you love woodwork, it does not mean your workmanship is not a spare-time activity
A spare-time activity must be vested on. You would not have a difficult time doing so, as the affair is there in the first place. Hence, motivation and drive are apparently inherent as well.

Newcomers to woodworking often wonder what the necessary tools in starting up a workshop are. The solution varies from one woodworker to the next, because there’s a tenacious list of required tools in the beginning. Plus, it depends upon the project.

For a good example, you travel to your nearest tool store to purchase a power tool. At present there’s a diversity of manufacturers and naturally, prices differ as well. Like in any merchandise, the more expensive, and so the better the quality. Finer quality tools in woodwork have better design features and functions, in addition to a high tolerance in manufacturing, they in addition perform better.

Purchase the finest tool that you are able to afford. Start a budget on how much you’re willing to spend on a specific tool. This is significant since you’ll be using your tools on a frequent basis.

And if you’re just starting out and you are able to only spend limited cash to establish your woodworking workshop, do not try for the absolute best then. You will be able to fall back on the ones that are relied on by most woodworkers that come in a reasonable price.

There are exclusions to the universal principle noted above. If woodworking is simply a spare-time activity you enjoy during the weekend, then you don’t have to get the top-of-the-notch tools.

The key is acquiring a tool that’s within your budget. But as often as possible, veer away from the cheapest tools and materials. They being cheap already tells something – these aren’t worth purchasing.

Here are the most common tools a woodworking newbie must have in his shop.

1. Electric Drill and Drill Bits – Electric drills are by far the first power tool purchased, they have so many uses besides drilling holes, there are attachments to turn them into paint mixers, sanders, screwdrivers, saws, grinders, lathes, the list goes on.

2. Electric Circular Saw – These can be very handy when cutting your wood pieces. No need to break the bank on this, however. Find one that’s easy for you to use and reliable.

3. Finishing Sander
These are used for sanding and finishing your projects. It can also be employed to smooth wood to clear out the edges.

4. Jig Saw – While not completely necessary, a good jig saw can help make your woodworking projects easier. They can add some eye-catching detail to a piece and make cutting wood easier as well.

5. Table Saw
Comparable to the drill, this is an additional tool that you must own and invest in. Though there are a few cheap table saws simply they’re not as powerful as the high-ticket ones. They do not work equally well as you desire too. Acquire a table saw with a strong motor, one that’s powerful enough that it can be used time and time again. If not, the blade will drag during the course of you ripping wood. It may even burn a few of your precious designs and no woodworker would desire that. Again there are loads of plans for jigs for this work horse.

6. Router – Routers have become one of the most used tools in a workshop, possibly even more popular than a table saw. A well equipped shop will have both a plunge base and a fixed base router; it is now possible to get a combination kit where one machine has both bases.

7. Compound Miter Saw
These are portable and used to cut miters, long wood stock and moldings. A great deal easier to handle than the table saw. You will be able to find plans on the internet for a neat table for this tool.

8. Drill Press
This tool is a workhorse in the shop it can be use for drilling holes, sanding with a sanding drum attachment.

9. Biscuit Joiner
Nifty tool for joining pieces of wood together. The tool cuts pocket-sized slots in every side of the join. The biscuit is inserted and glued in between, binding the parts altogether.

10. Basic Hand Tools
Claw hammers are the most common types of hammers used for woodworking and general repairs around the home.

Screwdrivers are needed for almost every woodworking project. Make sure you have various sizes of both Phillips head and flat head.

Wood chisels range in size from 1/4″ to 2″ wide in 1/8″ graduations. They are available with wooden or plastic handles.

Tape measures come in a variety of widths and lengths. I would not recommend anything less than 3/4″ wide for a tape over 6 feet long as they can not be extended out and remain rigid.
Clamps – Any project that is glued requires clamping to insure that the parts are bonded firmly in exactly the right position.

Finally, keep a wet / dry shop vacuum nearby so that you can quickly clean up wood shavings and dust. Keeping dust and wood particles to a minimum will reduce the risk of wood shop fires and help you breathe easier, too.

As a woodworking newcomer, you must have the best tools you are able to afford. However that also depends upon the projects that you plan on making. Prior to traveling to your closest home building provider to purchase your tools, think over what precisely you’ll be constructing.

I have an old house (possibly 100 years old, no one is sure of the exact age, over 70 years old for sure) The home is a two and a half story single family home, we did massive renovations on the inside, but hasvent worked on the outside appearance much. The Brick looks ugly. It is old and has different shades to it. What is the best option to make it look better? I havent tried power washing yet, I might try that in the next few days. What I did do is use a power tool i have for getting rid of old paint. It is like a Sander/Grinder and I tried this on about 20 of the bricks and the 20 bricks look 100 times better then they did before. Can I cause alot of damage to the bricks considering they are so old by sanding them down with the power tool I have?

Here are useful tips learned during more than 40 years of installing epoxy urethane floor seals and coatings on Fortune 500 company concrete floors, as well as in basements, garages, and decks. These tips can help you avoid mistakes that can limit the life of your floor.

There are three broad steps to doing your floor project: planning and preparation, repairing, and applying the coating. This article is the second in a three part series, and deals with repairing holes, cracks, and other damaged areas.

General guidelines for applying an epoxy coating to your floor:

Do no harm.
Investing in preparation produces the most years of service.
Let the chemicals and equipment do the work.
What can go wrong, will go wrong, unless you think ahead.
Technique is what separates mortals from Rembrandts.
An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Now let’s get started with tips on how to repair those holes, cracks, and spalled areas.

Plan the job.

Repairs should be done after the floor has been cleaned, prepped, and dried.

Dealing with old lifting paint or seals.

Bevel the edges of holes left by thick finishes pealing off.

Technique, technique, technique.

Hairline cracks

Expansion joints

Glue together surface breaks and chunks

You get two tries to repair your problem

Screen the floor after your primer coat repairs are made

Sweep your floor with a kitchen type broom before coating.

Vacuum the corners

. Its just too hard to get grains of sand and other small particles out of corners and along baseboards or out of holes unless you use a vacuum. Push brooms just don’t pick up enough of the small grains. A kitchen broom takes a little longer but does a better job.
. By screening your floor with a 60 grit screen after any additional repairs are made, you can usually shave your floor flat. This screening removes bubbles, lint, sand, bugs, leaves, and fillers that are above the desired surface.
. After making your floor repairs, coat with your primer coat of floor seal. Once the primer coat is dry, go back over the floor and use grout to fix any small holes that still show up.
. Often a concrete floor will break when its underlying support sags or is washed away. Using 100% solid epoxy can usually glue the two surfaces back together, unless the sagging has not stopped. You can make a trowel mix with epoxy and filler like colorquartz or sand. Note that any change of slope will remain obvious but the concrete can be made easy to clean and whole again. If you want to just pour 100% epoxy in the openings, make sure to fill the bottom of the cracks with sand or colorquartz to keep the liquid from flowing out the bottom of the floor.
. To quickly fix expansion joints, just use your grout with a gloved hand and apply the same technique as with hairline cracks. Be sure to shave the top flat so that grains will not show up on the surface areas on each side of the joint.
. If you don’t fill hairline cracks, they usually show up again after coating even if the topcoat looks like the hairline cracks were filled. Gravity working against a liquid for several hours before the coatings cure usually wins out and the liquid bridging the gap is drawn down exposing the crack again. A fast fix is to mix up some grout and with a gloved hand push the grout on the crack by moving at a 45-degree angle across or down the crack. Then skim off the surface to level the material so grains don’t show up after the coating is applied. Sweep up any crumbs left behind before coating.
Shallow holes from spalling, deep chipped paint, stones falling out of the concrete, or surface erosion can be approached in two basic ways. Fill with a semi-solid or fill with a liquid. A semi-solid is formed by mixing 100% solid epoxy with a filler like colorquartz or sand to make a peanut butter consistency mix to batter into the holes. This method assures that the hole will stay where you leveled it but grains may show up on the finished repair. Using liquid is easy but can leave the hole concave or convex. One approach is to fill the holes until the surface tension holds a bead slightly above the surface being repaired. After the epoxy hardens, grind it flush with a grinder or a sander. The second method is to fill the hole above the surface and then coat the floor while the 100% epoxy is still wet. When rolling over the wet epoxy with your topcoat use a wet roller and don’t pull out the patch material. Often this will break the surface tension and allow the patch to bend nicely with the surface around it so that no grinding is needed.
Sometimes the layers of old finish are so thick that when they lift off there are deep holes left behind. Use a grinder to bevel those edges at 45 degrees so when you fill them the new product can help keep the old hole from expanding.
During your preparation work, you should have a 4-in. razor scraper on a pole to shave off floor finish as it lifts up during each stage of the preparation. Then go back after the floor dries to get those lifting pieces that often appear as the floor dries. With enough effort you can remove most anything, so use some judgment as to when what remains on the floor seems to be well enough adhered.
Remember that a floor that has 3,000 lbs. or more going over it every day needs much better adhesion than a wall that may get brushed by an elbow occasionally. Stick your coating to something that is not going to move.
For filling large areas, you will want a latex type concrete patch. For expansion joints that don’t need to move and for small hairline to ¼” cracks, you can use a grout compound. For expansion joints that need to move, a urethane chalk works well. For shallow holes and spalling, it is best to use a two-part, 100% solid epoxy. A good first step is to go to a website like www.concrete-floor-coatings.com for a free cost analysis report that also lists everything you need to do your job including step-by-step instructions.

Remember, “Life imitates Star Trek.” You may begin to notice in the future that virtually every floor in the galaxy seems to have a flow-coated, two-part coating on it. I am seeing fewer and fewer new wood floors, linoleum, or oriental rugs. How about you?

Follow the rules and your job will turn out with the great look you want.

Power tools are an absolute necessity for most home improvement projects. You can get them just about anywhere, and many of them aren’t very expensive. But here are some recommendations on how to get the best use out of your power tools for do it yourself home improvements.

First of all, what power tools are you going to need? The four most common power tools that most do-it-yourselfers buy is the circular saw, jigsaw, router, and sander. The circular saw probably gets the most use of all the tools other than perhaps the sander. It’s an excellent choice for cutting down wood materials, especially plywood and sheet materials. The sander does exactly what its name indicates, it sands. But because it uses power to accomplish its sanding, it can save an incredible amount of time and drudgery.

The jigsaw is often used for cutting holes and patterns into panels, for instance cutting out the countertop when installing a sink. Routers can actually be used for a lot of different small projects that require making grooves or recesses.

There are other useful power tools including a band saw, a power planer, and an angle grinder. But the good news is that these are used infrequently enough that you can simply rent them when needed and usually save yourself a lot of money in the process.

When buying power tools keep in mind that most consumer reviews indicate that you generally get what you pay for. It may be an expensive proposition to buy a high-quality set of power tools all at once, but they will pay you back many times over in the coming years with good service. Most consumer reviews also indicate that the combination tool sets that allow you to have one body that accepts attachments for sanding, drilling, etc., do not perform nearly as well as the power tools that are dedicated to a specific purpose.

It’s important also to use power tools correctly. Avoid using power tools with very loose clothing, as it can easily get caught in the tool and become a serious safety issue. The same with long hair. And always wear a good set of safety glasses when using power tools of any sort for maximum eye protection.

Always inspect power tool cords before using them, as they can sometimes get cracked or broken and expose enough wire to create a safety hazard. Dull power tools can also be dangerous, so keep the blades and drill bits sharpened at all times to keep them functioning correctly.

If you have to rent any power tools, look them over very carefully before you leave the shop and make sure that they are in good usable condition, and have no apparent safety issues. Also be sure that you are thoroughly familiar with how each tool actually works before you leave.

Power tools are a tremendous time and energy saver for the average do-it-yourselfer. And they make do it yourself home improvements go so much faster and easier if you are safety conscious and careful.
