If you have high cholesterol or blood pressure, cutting back on fat and increasing fiber can help lower both. You may also lose weight in the process!

Try these food changes to reduce your fat and saturated fat intake. Saturated fat is the hard, artery clogging fat and you want to stay under 20 grams daily whenever possible. Total fat should be less than 50 grams for women and 60 grams for men.

1.	Eat only 1oz cheese instead of 2oz and save 5 grams saturated fat. One ounce is the portion of presliced cheese.

2.	Buy 95% lean ground beef instead of regular ground beef and save 3.5 grams saturated fat for every 3oz portion. Three ounces is the size of a deck of cards.

3.	Instead of whole milk choose 1% and save 3 grams saturated fat per 8oz serving.

4.	Choose tub margarine instead of butter and for every tablespoon you will save another 5 grams saturated fat.

Here are a few more ideas to trim your overall fat intake:

5.	Use low fat cream soups instead of regular for your casserole dish and save 6 grams fat per serving. That’s 15 grams fat less per can!

6.	Order an ice cream cone instead of blizzard or shake and save about 20 grams fat.

7.	Order your latte, mocha or cappuccino with nonfat milk and save about 6-7 grams fat for a 16oz serving.

Believe it or not, there actually are some foods you should eat more of to lower cholesterol and weight. Try switching these foods to increase your fiber intake for even more heart health power!

1.	Oatmeal can be a powerful weapon in lowering your LDL, the “bad” cholesterol that can increase plaque buildup in the arteries. What is it about oatmeal that makes it so healthy? Oatmeal is a whole grain and good source of soluble fiber. It also sticks with us longer to help control hunger.

2.	Add a spoonful of flaxseed to your oatmeal, bread mix, casserole, yogurt, salad or other foods for the fiber and omega-3 benefit. You can buy the seed and grind it in coffee grinder or buy a small package of milled flaxseed. Be sure to keep refrigerated once ground!

3.	Switch pastas, breads, cereals and other starch foods to whole grain or whole wheat. These changes will double your fiber intake.

4.	Try this to increase fruits & veggie intake: have 1 fruit serving for breakfast, 1 for morning snack, 2 veggies with lunch and 2 veggies with supper. Now you have the minimum 5/day you need. Eat more if you like!

5.	Beans are one of the best sources of fiber. Try to have 1-2 meals with beans each week. It’s easy if you like chili, bean soups, bean salads, baked beans, black beans, bean dips or beans in Mexican dishes.

6.	Don’t forget about nuts and seeds. Add nuts to your day for a snack or to salads. Just watch the serving size because they are high calorie!

7.	Enjoy popcorn for your snack. 3 cups gives you 3 grams fiber! Just go easy on the butter or oil.

Total fiber intake should be 20-35 grams fiber daily but don’t worry about the numbers. Just be sure to increase fiber gradually and drink enough water to avoid cramping and bloating.

Super foods are full of anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals but they also contain amino acids, which are the basic structural building blocks of proteins. Proteins make up the bulk of all your cells structure. They also act as enzymes for cellular reactions. There are eight essential amino acids they are:
#1 = Tryptophan which reduces anxiety and depression, helps with migraines, helps the immune system, reduces heart spasms, it is also a natural relaxant and aids in normal sleep, taken with Lysine it reduces cholesterol levels in the blood.
#2 = Lysine improves formation of bone cartilage and connective tissues, it aids in the absorption of calcium, it aids in the production of enzymes, hormones and the production of antibodies that help fight diseases and illness.
#3 = Methionine is the supplier of sulfur which prevents problems with hair, nails and skin. Methionine aids in the liver’s production of lecithin, reduces liver fat and helps protect the kidneys. Methionine also aids in reducing bladder irritations and infections and promotes hair growth.
#4 = Phenylalaine keeps you awake and alert, it is used in the brain to produce a chemical that transmits signals between the brain and the nerve cells, phenylalaine helps to improve your memory and also reduces hunger pains.
#5 = Threonine aids in digestion and intestinal tract functions; it also helps reduce liver fat.
#6 = Valine calms emotions and aids with mental vigor; it also aids with muscle coordination.
#7 and #8 work together; they are Leucine and Isoleucine, they help to produce essential biochemical components in the body, production of energy, stimulate the brain and aid with alertness.
There are also non-essential amino acids, why they are called non-essential is somewhat of a mystery, since all of them are needed for different biochemical reactions in the body as you will see.
Arginine improves immune response, promotes wound healing, aids in regeneration of the liver, and is needed for muscle growth.
Tyrosine aids in healthy functioning of the thyroid and pituitary glands, helps to improve memory and transmits impulses to the brain.
Glycine is required during cell production to release oxygen, it also aids in the production of essential hormones in the immune system.
Serine is essential in storing glucose in the muscles and liver, also aids in the immune system and produces a fatty acid cover to protect nerve fibers.
Aspartic acid aids in the removal of ammonia from the body. Ammonia is toxic to the body and aspartic acid helps to protect our body from the poison until it is expressed through the urine.
Glutamic acid helps improve mental capacities, aids in healing ulcers and helps with fatigue.
Alanine is a source of energy for the muscles, brain and nervous system. Alanine produces antibodies that help the immune system.
Cystine is an anti-oxidant and aids in the protection against pollutants, it can help slow the aging process, it is necessary in the production of skin.
Proline is vital in the functioning of joints, and helps to strengthen the heart muscle.
Taurine is necessary in the removal of free-radical waste from the body, it is a factor that is necessary for changes that take place during aging.
Histidine is found in the blood, it is used to treat several diseases such as RA, (rheumatoid arthritis) ulcers, and anemia. These are just a few of the amino acids that are essential in your diet for better health.
It is very important that you choose foods that are rich in amino acids as well as vitamins and minerals for your health.
Super foods are believed to contain the highest numbers of amino acids, vitamins and minerals. If you go to Google and type in super foods, you will find several sights, all telling you about the same thing, that eating a natural diet will protect you from several diseases and illnesses. Here are the ones that most people agree on, they are readily available in markets: Apples, avocados, tomatoes, bananas, cabbage, carrots, garlic, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, oranges, cantaloupe, broccoli, watermelon, dry beans, spinach, kale, salmon and other oily fish, flax seed, oats, soya, blueberries, cranberries, squash, almonds, beets, ginger, olive oil, tea, chili peppers, mushrooms, papaya, pineapple, kiwi, mangoes, apricots, pumpkin, walnuts, yogurt, parsley, sage, rosemary, cinnamon, brussel sprouts, lentils, pomegranates, concord grapes and brazil nuts.
After much research I found that not all of the foods I studied were true super foods. You have to consider where and how your food is grown. They do however; contain the necessary ingredients to be beneficial in your diet. It is absolutely true that you need various foods that react together for improved benefits in the body. If you consume an avocado you will reap the rewards but if you consume a grapefruit with your avocado they work as a team to fight disease and illness. This is true for most foods, there are however exceptions and they are; Wild salmon, tomatoes, broccoli and broccoli sprouts, kale, spinach, garlic, onions, blueberries, walnuts, pomegranates, depending how and where they are grown, then there’s goji berries, mulberries, Goldenberries, sauco berries, acai berries, noni fruit, mangosteen fruit, bee pollen, royal jelly, green tea, sea vegetables, quinoa, and Umeboshi plum.
Sea vegetables are true super foods, they contain significant amounts of protein and they also contain all the minerals found in the ocean. They offer 10 to 20 times the vitamins and minerals found in plants grown on land with just a few exceptions. There is a reason for this; we, as a population, have depleted our soils of the necessary nutrients that plants absorb. We also use chemicals and pesticides on our crops, these chemicals and pesticides are non-selective and destroy everything even the micro bacteria and micro fungi that is digested by the plants. When you purchase an apple from the store it is usually lacking most of the minerals that the soil once provided, minerals that are essential to our health. This is not true for the sea vegetables, the ocean is still productive, we have yet to destroy it and therefore it is a rich source for your health. Kelp, blue-green algae, spirulina, chorella, dulse, alaria, sea lettuce, Irish moss, Kombu, wakame, and nori are all rich in vitamins, minerals and all the essential amino acids.
Some fruits that are grown wild in other parts of the world are also true super foods and are still rich in nutrients because the soils are not depleted. The Mangosteen fruit is native to South East Asia, it has been studied for 20 years by independent labs and doctors for its medicinal uses; it contains 25,000 anti-oxidants, the highest number ever found in one food source, it contains amino acids as well as a vast majority of vitamins and minerals. The Goji berry is native to Asia; it contains amino acids and essential minerals and vitamins. Mulberries are native to Turkey; they are high in vitamin C, iron, calcium and protein. Goldenberries are native to Colombia and Peru, Sauco berries are native to South America, Umeboshi Plum is native to Japan, Noni fruit is native to Polynesia. The Acai berry has 30 times more anti-oxidants than blueberries, all eight essential amino acids and trace minerals. The list goes on, but what you eat is up to you, your health is in your hands.
If you are already suffering with a disease or illness or you’re prone to certain diseases or illness, due to family history, then there are a few things you need to know. If vegetables are cooked at over 118 degrees the heat will destroy most of the beneficial properties. You can not eat as much as you need, which is 8 to 10 servings a day, but there is a solution, you can juice your way to health. The food pyramid has changed which came as no surprise to me, I still have trouble with this type of system, not everyone needs the same things, and every person on this planet is different and has different nutritional requirements. There are some terms you need to understand before we continue:
Vitamins = nutrients that are necessary to your health, a shortage or an excessive amount for extended periods can cause health problems.
Phytonutrients = these are anti-oxidants that are plant-derived; they help to improve your health but are not required.
Carotenoids = they are in the dark coloring of the skin of fruits and vegetables (pigments), they are also anti-oxidants; there are dozens of carotenoids.
Free radical = they disrupt living cells by attacking them, free-radicals are missing an electron and they steal one from other cells, they are responsible for all diseases and illness due to their damage. Free-radicals are in air and water pollution, and in junk foods we eat. You can not escape from them; they are a part of life. Free-radical damage accumulates with age if you do not protect yourself.
Anti-oxidants = they neutralize free radicals by donating their extra electron; all anti-oxidants have an extra electron. Anti-oxidants protect us from free-radical damage. Anti-oxidants are called scavengers; they prevent cell and tissue damage, which leads to disease and illness. They are absolutely required for optimum health in very large numbers every day.
Synergy = nutrients that are taken in combinations; these combinations cause the nutrients to become more powerful then when taken alone.
Notice that the list above states that people agree that blueberries are a super food. Not all foods have been studied, take the cherry; it’s deep rich red color is full of carotenoids or it would not have that great color. The cherry has not been extensively studied yet. What does this mean for you? Be wise and eat fruits and vegetables that have the darkest and richest colors, in combinations, to receive maximum benefits. Do not make the mistake that others have made and write off all the unlisted fruits and vegetables, everything that grows in the ground has benefits for your health. Your food choices are a life or death decision, so do your research and find the best solutions for your health.
Beans may reduce the risk of heart disease; lentils support heart health; berries of all kinds have synergistic effects and are scavengers of free-radicals; citrus fruits are all full of anti-oxidants; vegetables steamed on low heat are a great source of fiber and complex carbohydrates; sea vegetables are bursting with carotenoids, vitamins, minerals and amino acids and can be found in many forms, tablet or powder. Sea vegetables support your whole body; green leafy vegetables are bursting with eye health nutrients as well as supporting the heart, brain and bones. Nuts help reduce the risk of heart disease; oats are a prime source of complex carbohydrates and full of fiber. Cold water – wild fish, not farm raised, contain beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, necessary for coronary heart health. Wild salmon, trout and tuna all contain different amounts and should all be consumed; seeds and nuts help balance hormones and have anti-oxidant activities; soy packs a punch with its anti-oxidation effects; mangosteen fruit is bursting with anti-oxidants and works in your entire body for your overall health.
There is some evidence that man and women need different nutrients to support biological needs. Men need to protect themselves against prostate cancer, bladder cancer, testosterone levels, sperm counts, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Men should add five tomatoes, or five servings of tomato sauce, a week to their diet to protect them from prostate cancer. Three oysters a day have the full day’s supply of zinc, which is essential for the male reproductive system, testosterone and sperm counts. Men are three times more likely to get bladder cancer than women; broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage, eaten five times a week, shows a reduction in this disease according to the studies. Eating a handful of un-salted peanuts every day helps lower your bad cholesterol levels, helping to reduce the risk of heat disease. Potassium can reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. Watermelon and other melons can help reduce your chances of developing high blood pressure. Women need to protect themselves against gallbladder disease, breast cancer and fight osteoporosis. Women tend to be anemic due to low iron levels, and women suffer with menopausal hot flashes. Women with low vitamin C levels are more likely to develop gall bladder disease than those with higher levels of vitamin C; papaya has twice the amount of vitamin C than an orange. Flaxseed is rich in an estrogen like compound called lignans. Make sure to get the seeds and grind them in a coffee grinder. You can put them on cereal or mix in muffin mix as there are no lignans in flaxseed oil; lignans have effectively slowed tumor growth in women that already have breast cancer. Vitamin K along with vitamin D and calcium are all-important nutrients for fighting osteoporosis. Women that get enough vitamin K are 30 percent less likely to suffer factures in their later years. Collard greens are the best source for this protection, although dark green leafy vegetables, Brussels sprouts, spinach and broccoli are also good sources. Women tend to be lower in iron than men due to menstruation and this can cause sever fatigue. To get the highest doses of iron you should try buffalo meat, you get an easily digestible 3 milligrams of iron in a 3-oz portion of this very lean meat. In later life women tend to suffer with the dreaded hot flashes. There may be relief found in tofu. A half-cup of tofu contains 30 mg of isoflavones, which are plant chemicals that have a structure that is similar to estrogen, and may offer some relief from hot flashes.
For men and women alike, make sure to add super foods to your diet, such as; sea vegetables, mangosteen fruit juice, Goji berry juice, or other berry juices. For information on the mangosteen and its medicinal properties call 1-888-374-4148, for all the other super foods just go to Google, type them in and do your research.
Being healthy takes effort on your part, do not put your health into someone else’s hands, they are not you and their nutritional requirements may be different than yours. Everyone is an expert when it comes to their own health, read and listen to the information but please make an informed choice for yourself.
Do the research! Your life and the quality of your life is in your hands.

Here are four different herbs that can give you hemorrhoid relief and help to get rid of your hemorrhoids. Using these herbs is a convenient and cost effective way to treat your hemorrhoid symptoms.

Use these herbs just long enough to give you hemorrhoid relief. Once you see that your symptoms have disappeared, stop using these herbs. Using herbs longer than necessary will make you less sensitive to the power of these herbs, if you have to use them again.

Comfrey root powder

Comfrey powder comes from an herbal root that has plenty of allantoin. This herb is a powerful acting herb that is anti-inflammatory and stimulates the formation of new skin. It can also cause hemorrhoids that are outside on the anus to shrink and pull back. This makes comfrey powder an effective hemorrhoid remedy.

Here’s how to use it. Buy the powder and not the liquid. Make a paste by mixing it with olive, fish, or flaxseed oil. Apply the paste directly onto your anus and surrounding area. You can apply it at night and your morning shower will remove it.

Fresh comfrey leaves or roots are the best to use. However, you can get precut and dried comfrey root and leaves from a health food or herb store. If you use the dried leaves, you can put them into a coffee grinder to create a powder. Use this powder to create a paste with oils.

Gotu Kola

Gotu Kola is an Indian herb that is a hemorrhoid remedy. Use an extract that has 70% triterpenic acid since this is the active ingredient. Take 30 mg of Gotu Kola 3 time a day.

Gotu kola extract reduces pain, swelling, fatigue, and sensation of heaviness from hemorrhoids.

Horse Chestnut

Horse chestnut comes from the bark of a tree and has been found to be useful in treating hemorrhoids. It contains the chemicals “aesculin” and “aescin”, which strengthen your blood vessels and which help to reduce hemorrhoids. It also helps to reduce inflamed areas.

Here’s how to use it. You can make a tea and apply it directly to your hemorrhoids. However, do not drink the tea since it contains tannin, which tightens mucus and tissue and would cause constipation. Use it in powder form and mix it with oil to produce a paste and apply it to your anus area.

Plantain Herb

Plantain also has plenty of allantoin just like comfrey root powder.

Here’s how to use it.

Use it just like comfrey powder by mixing it with oil and applying it directly to your anus. You can also combine equal parts of the plantain and comfrey powder. If you only have plantain leaves, put them in a coffee grinder to create a powder. Now you can make a mixture with oil and both of these herbs.

The prostate gland is located directly beneath the bladder and in front of the rectum. It’s a small, walnut-sized structure that makes up part of a man’s reproductive system. It wraps around the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine out of the body. And because of this it can cause various urinary problems. I suspect there may be a dietary connection to prostate cancer. I cured myself naturally of breast cancer and others have cured themselves of all types of cancer using a diet of living foods.

Prostate cancer is deadly, but because it is slow-growing it can be cured if it is caught early. Prostate cancer is characterized by ‘grade’ and ‘stage’. Grade is given to indicate how quickly a cancer is growing – the higher the grade, the more likely it is that the cancer will grow and spread rapidly. The size and extent of the tumor will determine its stage. In most men, prostate cancer grows so slowly they men will never even know they have the condition.

Weak or an interrupted flow of urine and painful or burning urination can be symptoms to watch for. One of the most common symptoms is the inability to urinate and if you have this symptom you should get checked right away. The need to urinate frequently, especially at night is another common symptom.

If you find blood in the urine or semen and have frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs, these can be cancer symptoms. But having one or more cancer symptoms does not necessarily mean that you have prostate cancer. Additional symptoms that may be associated with cancer are bone pain or tenderness, and abdominal pain.

A urinalysis may indicate if there is blood in the urine, which may or may not be related to cancer. Another test usually used when prostate cancer symptoms are present is a digital rectal exam (DRE) performed by your doctor, proctologist or sometimes an oncologist. A prostate gland biopsy usually confirms the cancer diagnosis.

A chest x-ray may be done to see if there is a spread of cancer called metastasis. Keep in mind that many experts report that PSA tests are not reliable and they are looking for better ways to diagnose prostate cancer. Also urine or prostatic fluid cytology may reveal unusual cells.

Medications can have many side effects, including hot flashes and loss of sexual desire, so consider this carefully before you commit to taking any. Many men simply want the best treatment they can get but what’s important is choosing the treatment that the best for you. What you can do now is begin to understand what exactly your treatment options are and what you are going to do first.

A new therapy is on the forefront that recruits the body’s own immune system cells to destroy tumors that could become a new way to treat men with advanced prostate cancer that is if the FDA approves the highly individualized treatment. In patients whose health makes the risk of surgery unacceptably high, radiation therapy is often the chosen conventional alternative, but think it through whether or not you want to expose yourself to this. And anyone considering surgery should be aware of the benefits, risks and the extent of the procedure and how it will affect your daily life.

Be aware that many men these days choose natural treatment options and forgo any surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. Some drugs with numerous side effects are being used to treat advanced prostate cancer, blocking the production of testosterone, called chemical castration. It has the same result as surgical removal of the testes. Whether radiation is as good as removing the prostate gland is debatable and the decision about which to choose, if any, can be difficult. The body has memory for all radiation and surgery has numerous drawbacks.

If more chemotherapy is decided upon after the first round of chemotherapy, most men receive further doses on an outpatient basis at a clinic or physician’s office. Prostate tumors require testosterone to grow. Reducing the testosterone level is used to prevent further growth and spread of the cancer. Medicines can be used to adjust the levels of testosterone, called hormonal manipulation, but consider this approach carefully.

Dietary tips – use flaxseed oil in a daily dark green salad. A good dietary, natural treatment approach is to avoid all acidic foods, which are inflammatory, that is, foods that are dead. Eat living plant foods. Drink plenty of pure filtered water, at least a quart a day.

Consider taking liquid cod liver oil or fish oil supplements every day. Buy lacinato kale and juice it in your juicer with some sweet carrots. For an easy fiber boost, mix in two tablespoons of ground up flaxseeds in raw applesauce, from two or three apples, made in a food processor. Grind the flaxseeds in an old cleaned-up coffee grinder.

Add a small handful of kale or spinach to your fruit smoothie and blend well. No one will ever know. Eat at least one, preferably two organic apples with the skin on every day. Put two tablespoons of coconut oil, the kind that is unbleached, unrefined and undeodorized, in your smoothies. Coconut oil is plant-based, not animal-based and is actually good for us.

Consider sites, like this one, just a starting point where you can begin to learn more about prostate cancer. Once diagnosed you may be want to join a support group whose members share their experiences and problems. But be careful because many may choose conventional treatment and if you choose natural treatment you may want to share information with others who are using the same approach. It’s important to get as informed as possible and read all the newest books, ebooks and research available regarding both conventional and alternative natural approaches.

If you’re worried about your blood pressure and want to know more about natural cures for when it is excessive, read on.

An Introduction to Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is very common. However, excessively high blood pressure tends to be genetic and affects approximately 15 to 17 percent of people. Technically, there’s no cure for this condition, but you can make changes in your life to reduce it to a manageable level.

The greatest drawback to high blood pressure is that it can be very dangerous, but there are no unique visible or external symptoms associated with the condition. If your blood pressure is extremely high or it goes up very quickly, you could experience headaches or blurry vision.

There is no cure for this problem, but treatment exists to lower the pressure and manage it on a daily basis. Conventional and complementary therapies aim to find the treatment, or combination of treatments, that suits an individual without causing discomforting side effects. Lifestyle factors should also be examined and changes introduced where necessary.

To learn about specific herbal and natural cures to address the effects, please read on.

Gotu Kola Tea

Gotu Kola tea should be sipped three times every day. Alternatively, you can take this herb in capsule or tablet form. It has few side effects, except for rare instances of nausea and abdominal cramping, which may be an allergic reaction. However, the herb can cause drowsiness and shouldn’t be taken in conjunction with sleep aids or cold medications.

Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed oil has been shown to be effective in reducing high blood pressure, probably due to the effects of the Omega-3 fatty acids it contains. Although cold-water fish have higher levels of Omega-3′s, Flax (along with almonds) is one of the few plants that does contain it. When it’s exposed to air, flaxseed oil can go bad, so you should keep it in a cool place and use it within a month or two of opening it up.

Your best option is to buy fresh flaxseed and store it in your refrigerator. Because the seeds are durable and can pass right through the digestive system, you need to grind or crush them before use. You can utilize a pestle and mortar or a grinder for coffee to crush the seeds. They’re very tasty on cereal or sprinkled over a salad.

Garlic

Garlic has been proven to lower blood pressure by as much as eight points. The great thing about garlic is that it can be added to almost anything. However, once you cook garlic, it becomes less effective, so raw garlic is still your best bet for lowering blood pressure.

If you’re concerned about your breath or ability to eat two, uncooked cloves of garlic every day, you can try garlic capsules. They’re one of the most popular natural cures for high blood pressure and readily available.

Regardless of the healthy approach you select, there is a certain urgency around the need to pursue treatment since left untreated, high blood pressure can be a deadly condition.

There is a popular myth that one should avoid all fat in the diet, but there is a category of fats that is necessary for good health.

Fatty acids are the building blocks for oils and fats. Those that are necessary for health and can not be manufactured by the body are called essential fatty acids (EFAs). The essential fatty acids are occasionally referred to as vitamin F. These polyunsaturates must be supplied through the diet.

EFAs have desirable effects on many disorders. They reduce blood pressure, help prevent arthritis, lower blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, reduce the risk for forming blood clots, and improve the skin and hair.

Some of the conditions helped by EFAs include candidiasis, cardiovascular disease, eczema, and psoriasis. They are found in high concentrations in the brain and aid in the transmission of nerve impulses and are needed for the normal development and functioning of the brain. A deficiency of essential fatty acids can lead to an impaired ability to learn and impaired memory.

EFAs are needed by every cell of the body. They are necessary for rebuilding and producing new cells. EFAs are also used for the production of prostaglandins, the hormone like substances that function as chemical messengers and regulators of many body processes.

Essential fatty acids are divided into two basic categories, omega-3 and omega-6, based on their chemical structures. Omeg-3 EFAs include alpha-linolenic and eicosapentaeanoic acid (EPA). They are abundant in fresh deepwater fish, fish oil, and certain vegetables including canoloa oil, flaxseed oil, and walnut oil. The Omega-6 EFAs include linoleic and gamma-linolenic acids. They are found most abundantly in raw nuts, seeds, and legumes, and in unsaturated vegetable oils like borage oil, grape seed oil, primrose oil, sesame oil, and soybean oil.

These oils must be consumed in pure liquid or supplement form in order to supply essential fatty acids. They must not be subjected to heat (in processing or cooking) as it destroys EFAs and creates dangerous free radicals. If oils are processed to make them more solid (hydrogenated), as in production of margarine, the linoleic acid is converted into trans-fatty acids, which are harmful to the body.

The daily requirement for essential fatty acids is satisfied by an amount equivalent to 10 to 20 percent of total caloric intake. Of all EFAs, the most essential is linoleic acid. A number of sources are available to obtain the daily requirement of EFAs.

EMU Oil

is an excellent source for linoleic acid, linolenic acid and oleic acid. These all have anti-inflammatory properties. Emu oil is used topically for the relief of rashes, hemorrhoids, poison ivy, insect bites, arthritis, joint pain, muscle strains, and burns. It is also used as a facial moisturizer for reducing wrinkles and lines.

FISH Oil

is a good source of omega-3 essential fatty acids. Salmon, mackerel, menhaden, herring, and sardines are excellent sources of fish oil because they have a higher fat content and provide more omega-3 factors than other fishes. Four ounces of salmon contains up to 3,600 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids, while 4 ounces of cod contains only 300 milligrams.

People with diabetes should not take fish oil supplements because of the high fat content, but they should eat fish for its essential fatty acids.

FLAXSEED and Flaxseed Oil

are rich in omega-3 EFAs, magnesium, potassium, and fiber. They also provide the B vitamins, protein, and zinc. They contain no cholesterol and are low in saturated fats and calories.

The nutty taste of ground flaxseed is pleasant. Ground flaxseed can be mixed with water or any fruit or vegetable juice. They can also be added to salads, soups, yogurt, cereals, baked goods, or fresh juices. The seeds can be ground in a coffee grinder.

An alternative to the seeds is flaxseed oil. Organic cold-pressed flaxseed oil is rich in essential fatty acids. Studies have shown it can reduce the pain, inflammation, and swelling of arthritis. It can lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and help reduce the hardening effects of cholesterol on cell membranes.

GRAPE SEED Oil

is among the highest natural sources for linoleic acid and among the lowest in saturated fats. It contains no cholesterol and no sodium. Its light nutty taste brings out the flavor in many foods. It can be (unlike other oils) heated to temperatures as high as 485 degrees F without producing dangerous and possibly carcinogenic free radicals. This makes it good for use in cooking. Buy only grape seed oil that is cold-pressed and contains no preservatives.

PRIMROSE Oil

contains 9 to 10 percent gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This fatty acid helps prevent hardening of the arteries, heart disease, premenstrual syndrome, multiple sclerosis, and high blood pressure. It can relieve pain and inflammation, enhance the release of sex hormones, including estrogen and testosterone. It aids in lowering cholesterol levels and is beneficial for cirrhosis of the liver.

An exciting development in the functional food area is the fortified egg. Bodybuilders know that eggs are a good source of protein, but eggs can now also be a good source of omega-3 essential fatty acids. Some egg producers are adding flaxseed to the feed of hens. Adding omega-3 fatty acids, in the form of flaxseeds, to the diets of hens increases the omega-3 fatty acid content of eggs by over six times that of regular eggs. Eating two fortified eggs may provide an adequate amount of omega-3 fatty acids. Egg producers also add vitamin E to the flaxseed feed to keep it stable. This can cause the vitamin E content of fortified eggs to be as much as eight times higher than that of normal eggs. It is also worthy to note that eggs can taste better with the vitamin E enrichment

Legumes

Sometimes referred to as the poor mans meat, legumes are an excellent source of soluble fiber, which is important for keeping an athletes blood sugar and energy levels stable. As far as plant foods go, most legumes are relatively high in protein and are a good source of slow releasing complex carbohydrates. This is great for providing a more stable and longer lasting supply of energy for working out. Legumes can be eaten in chili, stews, and soups, and are also enjoyable when served cold in bean salads. Some of the more common legumes found in the U.S. include pinto beans, kidney beans, navy beans, lima beans, black beans, chickpeas, lentils, and black-eyed peas. Legumes can be purchased dry, canned, and sometimes frozen.

Allium Vegetables

Allium vegetables, such as garlic, chives, onions, scallions, and leeks, are a flavorful way to add healthful nutrients to a bodybuilders diet. The benefits of garlic and other allium vegetables may come from their abundant flavonoids, such as quercetin, and also from their sulfur-containing compounds. Allium vegetables may be more beneficial when uncooked. So you may want to add them to sandwiches, salads, salad dressings, and other raw recipes to get the most from them.

Mollusks

Low in fat, a source of protein, and high in essential minerals, mollusks can be a good addition to a bodybuilders diet. Three popular and nutritious mollusk choices are clams, oysters, and mussels. Clams, in particular, lead the way for all foods in heme iron content. Heme iron found only in red meat, poultry, fish, and seafood is iron bound to a nonprotein compound that is much more easily absorbed by the body than free iron. Clams are also an excellent source of vitamin B12 and copper. These three nutrients may help maintain good blood status for delivering oxygen to working muscles. Along with copper, mollusks are also rich in zinc and selenium. These minerals are necessary for the proper functioning of the bodys immune system and its antioxidant defenses. Mollusks can be cooked in a variety of ways, including steaming, stewing, roasting, baking, broiling, sauting, poaching, and frying.

Nuts

Nuts are a very rich source of nutrients, including polyunsaturated fatty acids, vegetable proteins, fiber, vitamin E, potassium, folate, magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper, phosphorous, phytosterols, antioxidants, and arginine. Although nuts are considered a fatty food, the fat in them may be beneficial. Some healthful choices for the bodybuilder include almonds, walnuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, peanuts, pecans, pine nuts, and pistachios. But remember, eating too much of a good thing can really increase your caloric intake, which could lead to an increase in bodyfat. A good guideline may be to eat one or two servings per day. A serving is one ounce (24 almonds).

Whole Grains

Bodybuilders may find whole-grain foods helpful in providing steady energy for hard training. Whole-grain foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and essential fatty acids. Some examples of good whole-grain foods include oatmeal, whole-wheat flour, barley, spelt, brown rice, and some hot and cold breakfast cereals. Be wary of products labeled 100% wheat, stone-ground, multi-grain, seven-grain, 12-grain, or organic. They often contain very little whole grain. Instead, look for whole-grain products that say 100% whole wheat.

Salmon

One of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids, salmon is a great way to add more musclebuilding protein to your diet. Omega-3 essential fatty acids are important building blocks of cell membranes and, like protein, may help athletes recover from strenuous workouts. Omega-3 fatty acids are also a great addition to anyones fat-loss plan.

Tomato Products

Not often do you find a natural food that actually benefits nutritionally by being cooked and processed. This seems to be the case, however, for tomatoes. It appears that even though some vitamin C is lost when tomatoes are heated, the antioxidant power is increased during the process. Researchers have found that the antioxidant lycopene, which is the pigment that makes tomatoes and other fruits like pink grapefruit and watermelon red, is made more bioavailable to the human body after heating. Foods rich in lycopene include canned tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato juice, tomato paste, salsa, and ketchup.

Flaxseeds

Also known as linseeds, flaxseeds are small, oval-shaped seeds from the blue flowering flax plant. Flaxseeds are considered one of the best plant sources of healthful omega-3 essential fatty acids, and they’re also a good source of fiber. Flaxseeds (but not all flaxseed oil) are rich in phytochemicals called lignans that may have strong antioxidant properties that can help you stay healthy. There are several sources of lignans, such as whole grains, various berries, and soybeans, but flaxseeds are the best source. For easier digestion, flaxseeds should be ground first; a coffee grinder is good for this. The pleasant, nutty flavor of ground flaxseeds can be enjoyed in many foods, such as baked breads, muffins, and cookies. They can also be eaten in salads, cereals, soups, sauces, or mixed with a serving of NITRO-TECH protein powder.

Cruciferous Vegetables

Vegetables such as watercress, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussels sprouts, and cabbage are known as cruciferous vegetables. These vegetables are high in fiber, rich in vitamin C, very low in calories, and a good source of healthful phytonutrients. Eating cruciferous vegetables is a good way to take in important micronutrients without taking in a lot of calories. Bodybuilders wishing to lose bodyfat will find cruciferous vegetables to be a good addition to a their focused diet. Try to get three or more servings of these vegetables each week.

It is also interesting to note that cruciferous vegetables can be a dieting bodybuilders best friend, as in many cases they require more calories to be digested than they provide. Cruciferous vegetables not only help fill you up, but they also help you burn more calories!

Bodybuilders put great demand on their bodies during heavy training. Eating well will keep you going strong and staying healthy. Remember, a healthy bodybuilder is a better bodybuilder, so try to add some of these superfoods today.

The benefits of flax seeds are numerous and include constipation relief, clearing up acne, smooth skin, they assist in building muscle and burning fat, they’re good for heart health and they might even help with depression and arthritis.

Flax seeds are small seeds that at first glance look like the sesame seeds used on hamburger buns. They are very inexpensive and you can chew them up in their natural form. Flax seeds are high in Omega 3 oils. Omega 3 is not something the body produces on its own.

You can find flax seeds at your health food store or places that sell natural foods in bulk. Flax seed can be chewed in its seed form or you can buy vitamin supplements of flax seed oil in pill form. The seed form is much cheaper in price and you can buy a pound for just a few dollars.

Drink plenty of water when using ground up seeds or chewing the seeds. Be sure to keep the flax seeds refrigerated. And never heat flax seeds as that may cause a chemical breakdown in the seeds and could be even carcinogenic as a by-product.

When it comes to constipation, the flax seed has been proven to be very effective. Flax seeds are astringent and have a laxative action. They are good for mild to moderate symptoms of constipation. It’s not as harsh on the system as some of the fiber alternatives, yet it does act quickly. You can even grind the seeds in a coffee grinder to make into a powder. You can eat the powder or add it to a nondairy smoothie, a juice, or on cereal. It’s even tasty when sprinkled onto salad.

Up to 3 tablespoons twice a day should get the results you’re looking for. But do be careful. Consuming an large amount of flax seeds can contribute to back up in your colon. Flax seeds also have small traces of prussic acid, which in excessive amounts is toxic. But it would take a lot of flax seeds to reach a toxic level.

Since our bodies do not produce their own Omega 3, so we need to get it from our diet. Flax seed oil capsules are high in Omega 3 (although fish oil capsules have even higher concentrations of Omega 3). Omega 3 is a polyunsaturated fatty acid which, as it passes through the digestive tract in the human body, it breaks down existing cholesterol and deposits a thin barrier to prevent its reformation.

Omega 3 works to fight against the main cholesterol deposits that cause clotting of the blood. These clots then block blood vessels causing heart attacks or strokes if they reach the brain. The American Heart Association recommends a daily intake of 1000 mg. of Omega 3 for measurable benefits in heart health.

Flax seeds can also help to clear acne. It’s fatty acids that help control the production of excess androgens (hormones that peak during the teen-age years). The androgens cause excess sebum oil to clog hair follicles and can contribute to creating more acne. Because of this androgen control, flax seeds may also help with building muscle and burning fat and reducing water bloating (and possibly hair loss) that is sometimes caused through excess androgens.

Omega-3 may also be a good nutrient for the brain and concentration. Omega-3 fats seem to work by making the thin fatty membranes that surround the nerve cells in the brain more flexible. This allows more neurotransmitters to be successfully transmitted between nerve cells, increasing our ability to think faster and concentrate better. Omega-3 has also been shown to have a number of other effects that control harmful inflammation (arthritis) and even possibly prevent depression.

With flax seeds being so inexpensive, it’s worth giving them a try. Your local health food store should have them or be able to tell you where to find flax seeds.
