Can someone explain why I have a horrible smell coming from the sump pump in the basement?

We just built a new house, and have lived here less than 2 months. There is a HORRIBLE smell coming from the basement, in the area of the sump pump and grinder pump. The sump pump runs about every 15 minutes, which is somewhat normal since we are on a high water table. We have a well, and our water has a high sulphur content, but this is not a rotten egg smell, it smells more like sewage. It’s infiltrating the entire house, and I have no idea what to do about it! Can someone please help me? Thank you!

Maybe something fell in there (rat, mouse etc) and that’s what the smell is. Have someone check it out, call the plumber so you don’t mess it up.

I had the same problem and had to install a Culligan water Filtration unit. It did the trick and the smell is gone. You really do not want to use or drink water that smells that bad. It cannot be good for you.

open up the cover and look inside. Did something fall into the water, is there mold around the top? You may have to call a local plumber in your area and see if they have any ideas.

Ok if it smells like sewage, it probably is.

Stop pooping in the basement for awhile and see if it smell goes away. You might also try taking a garden hose and put it down in the sump pump, to allow the pump to work it’s magic and get the crud down there to the sewer or your septic tank.

Check the gasket on the top of the ejector crock. Also check the plumbing connections to the crock. Also check to see that the bolts that hold the lid of the ejector crock on are tight. If I were to guess I’d say the problem is from the ejector crock not being sealed in some way.
